The Education of Henry Adams Classic Illustrated Edition eBook Henry Adams A Willis

I was not sure what to expect with this book. I picked it up because it was on the Modern Library list of the 100 best nonfiction books of the 20th century (published 1907). It turns out that, I have really enjoyed it. Henry Adams has a remarkable eye for irony, and because he was close to power for many of the major events of the late 19th century he has ample opportunity to use that eye. Additionally, after reading many history books on this time period, this is the first time that it has really come alive for me - understanding that there were real people dealing with massive change. He frequently refers to being raised an 18th century man, but needing education for the 20th century - the difficulty of making that transition is the focus of the book - and he is able to explain with wit and clarity how this all happens.

The Education of Henry Adams Classic Illustrated Edition eBook Henry Adams A Willis Reviews

This should be read by every American who is concerned with the country and how it is run. Today appears no different than 100 to 150 years ago. Lincoln is not the second coming in this memoir. McKinley, Andrew Johnson, a taste of them all.
Any American above middle-school age or anyone else for that matter with an interest in the intellectual history of the United States should read this, the second volume of Henry Adams' observations. The first volume is little read these days and for good reason but this book is both enlightening and entertaining.
Could not connect with this book
This was selected by my book club, primarily because it is hailed as one of the top nonfiction books produced by an American. Sometimes I felt I was slogging through it, a slow read. But it picked up after about the first third and Adams comes through with remarkable observations, such as humanity will have to make an intellectual leap in the 20th century to keep up with the information available. I think a good question is Have we done that? I don't think we've adjusted yet, perhaps our children will. This is probably considered an important book because of the perspective Adams provides on American history. This is worth reading, but be prepared to spend some time on it. I would recommend a little every day, perhaps a chapter a day.
It was fun to walk alongside Henry through some of history's big events, also interesting to see what events and people across history were meaningful and influential to him. It was insightful to take in Adam's reflections on happenings as they unfolded in his real time; Darwin's theory of survival of the fittest, Curie and her work with radium, Roentgen and his observation of "x-radiation", etc. In the end some interesting observations on the nature and meaning of life, friendship and the essence of force, power, energy, order, disorder within the whole of creation.
This book has everything science, religion, evolution, politics, war, betrayal, inventions, social satire, social issues, humor, regret & sorrow. It was sometimes very boring, & sometimes so fascinating I couldn't put it down for hours. Read it!
Adams has a gentle sense of humor and the vision of life's philosophers.
He starts by noting the curiosities of his education. He was a man out of place. In time. He had the skills for success in 18th century born in the 19th. Much of what he was born with left him I'll equipped for success.
He adds a unique perspective of the world around him and of history.
